The family of a St. Mary man is calling for a thorough investigation by the authorities after he was killed, reportedly by an off-duty cop, in the Preston Hill community on Sunday morning.

According to eyewitness accounts, the police officer and 24-year-old Ricardo Small got into an argument which escalated into a fight.

Speaking with Radio Jamaica News on Tuesday, Ricardo's father, Richard Small, said he attempted to break up the fight between his son and the cop.

"By time mi come cross the road, him up pon mi son again wid eh gun, point eh gun inna him face. Mi nuh know if a shoot him inna guh shoot or wah, but mi son jump up again and grab him. And him and him wrestle and come cross. One likkle Noah bus wayn park right yah suh. Dem slam inna di bus," the father recounted.

Mr. Small said as he held on to his son, the policeman rested the gun against him and fired a shot.

The father is echoing the familiar call for 'justice', insisting that his son was not involved in wrongdoing.

"Him nuh do di man nut'n at all. All dem have a likkle argument and him kill mi son just fi dat. Mi nuh know of mi son as nuh robber nor nuh tief... or nuh gunman or anything. Eh man just inna argument wid mi son and kill him fi nut'n at all, so mi woulda like justice serve," he demanded.

Meanwhile, Ricardo Small's mother, Dorret Sommerville, who had also been holding on to her son during the incident, was treated at hospital for a bullet wound to the shoulder.

Her daughter was reportedly also grazed by the same bullet.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has been collecting statements as part of its probe into the incident.
