Family of tourist killed in road accident still in shock

An American businessman from Kentucky died after he was hit by a car while on vacation in Negril Friday night.

On Sunday, his family is still trying to make sense of the loss.
Roy Stout, 57, came to Jamaica frequently to unwind.

His family told the NBC affiliate in Lexington, LEX18 he had been to the resort town of Negril at least four times, and he had made many friends there.

No one could have imagined that this visit would be his last.

It was supposed to be a vacation in paradise for Roy Stout and his girlfriend, Cheryl Gillenwater.

But Friday night, Stout's younger brother Jerry got a call from the U.S. Embassy in Jamaica.
"She said, 'unfortunately your brother's been hit by a car and killed, and Cheryl is in the hospital," said Jerry Stout.

The police in Negril told family members that Roy Stout saw the car headed toward his girlfriend, and his instincts were to protect her.

"Her family has been told he saved her life. He shoved her out of the way, and took the hit that came at him," said Stout.

Jerry Stout says it is just like his brother Roy to look out for others. Roy Stout left a mark on Lexington.

He ran Stout Printing, with his brother Jerry, for 34 years.

"He was the heart of the business. As far as I'm concerned, the best printer in the city of Lexington," said Jerry Stout.

Roy was also a child actor for a short time. In the 1950s, Roy's father was host of the children's show "The Shorty Stout Show," which aired LEX18.

Now, in much more difficult times, the Stout family is sticking together.

Jerry Stout plans to keep the family business open.

"We'll try to keep it going in his memory, but it will be a challenge. He
had a lot of good friends, and they won't forget him," said Jerry Stout.

The family's focus is on bringing Roy's body back home.

It's still in Jamaica, and is expected to be transported back to the U.S. by Thursday.

The driver of the car will face manslaughter charges.

Cheryl Gillenwater has broken legs, and was flown back to Kentucky and remains in hospital in Lexington.
