As the police step up pressure on criminals involved in Sunday's mass shooting in Cherry Tree Lane, Clarendon, it has been revealed that one of the prime suspects was shot dead Wednesday evening during an operation in Toll Gate.
The deceased is Steve Smith, otherwise called 'Thicka' or 'Fly Brain'.
The police say he is suspected of being involved in numerous contract related killings and other serious and illicit activities in Clarendon and other parishes.
He was wanted by the May Pen Police for murder for some time and was a person of interest in several other murder investigations.
National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang says three people were directly involved in Sunday's mass shooting.
One of them surrendered to the police on Wednesday.
Smith, who was the second suspect, engaged the police in a shootout and was killed.
The third suspect is still being sought by the police.
Dr. Chang said the shooters involved in Sunday's attack are contract killers.
He said nine people have already been taken into police custody.
The minister was speaking Wednesday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines.
The police say Wednesday's operation was part of a recently launched joint security effort, led by the Jamaica Constabulary Force in collaboration with the Jamaica Defence Force and the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency.
Its mission is to identify, apprehend and bring the perpetrators to justice, and to restore normalcy to the affected communities.
The security forces are reminding suspects to surrender peacefully when they are being apprehended, and not to challenge the officers.
They have also appealed for the continued cooperation and support of the community and have urged anyone with information related to the incidents to come forward and share what they know, through any of the anonymous reporting mechanisms established.
They are Crime Stop at 311, the JDF Tip Line at 876-837-8888 or MOCA's anonymous Tip Line at (888) MOCA-TIP.
