A father and his three-year-old son are dead following a house fire at Wallen Parkway in Westchester, St. Catherine on Tuesday night.

They are 40-year-old Sherman Williams and Cleon Williams.

Mr. Williams died in hospital Wednesday morning where he was being treated for burns and smoke inhalation.

The fire, which started sometime after 11 o'clock, was contained to the back of the house.

A relative who lives at the house said her uncle and cousin were found at the door to their room.

"I saw a picture on a officer phone where it's like he was protecting the child, so he scoop up the child and he was on one side so the baby was under his arm. One side, as I could see, was totally burned; you could only see white," she recounted.

Principal of Faith Assembly of God Basic School, Rosemarie Gooden, said Cleon, who had been attending the school for one month, was outspoken.

"He's very open in expressing himself; very smart boy. And we are truly saddened," she said. "When I got the news this morning I was really heartbroken cause I'm saying, boy, the future of Jamaica, our children are just being taken from us by the droves," she lamented.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Jamaica Fire Brigade's Divisional Commander for St. Catherine, Superintendent Dennis Lyon, said a number of the house fires which have occurred could have been prevented.

Superintendent Lyon appealed for greater vigilance in managing open flames, and advised persons not to smoke in bed or leave lit candles or the stove unattended.

He noted that this is the second fatal house fire in his division in recent days.

About 10:30 Saturday night, a fire broke out at a house at Narine Lane in Old Harbour Bay.

The remains of Lloyd Bailey were later found inside.
