A female constable who was hailed last year for gallantry after she reportedly shot dead one of two gunmen who attempted to steal her car along Caledonia Avenue in St. Andrew has been charged with murder.
Melissa White, who is attached to the Police Commissioner's Office, was charged Tuesday morning by detectives attached to the Bureau of Special Investigation with the murder of Edward George Brown.
Mr. Brown was fatally shot on June 6 at the intersection of Old Hope Road and Caledonia Avenue.
It was reported by the Cross Roads Police that about 9 p.m., the police woman stopped at a traffic light when two men, one armed with a rifle and another with a pistol, attempted to steal her car.
The gunmen reportedly blocked the vehicle and ordered her out.
She responded and challenged the gunmen.
During the incident, one of the gunmen was shot and injured.
The female cop reported at the time that to preserve her life, she left the scene without retrieving the weapon.
The injured man was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The policewoman was praised for her action.
However, an investigation conducted by the Inspectorate of the Constabulary and INDECOM disproved her story.
CCTV footage and eyewitness statements obtained by investigators revealed that the man was allegedly murdered by the constable.
It was reported that Mr. Brown stole a bottle of olive oil from the Hi Lo Supermarket and was running when he was shot by the policewoman.
Constable White appeared before the St. Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday, where she was offered bail in the sum of $500,000.
She is to return on April 27.
