Five days after the Atlantic hurricane season began, the first named storm formed Wednesday in the Gulf of Mexico. The storm is not a threat to Jamaica.
Tropical Storm Andrea is centred over the east-central Gulf and has been affecting Southwest Florida’s weather. The storm's heavy rains also pounded western Cuba on Wednesday. Civil Defense officials declared a weather alarm in Pinar Del Rio province through Thursday as a low-pressure system approaching from Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula also dumped nearly 12 inches of rain in some spots.
The Atlantic hurricane season started June 1 and runs through to November 30. Forecasters say there is a 70 per cent likelihood of 13 to 20 named storms of which seven to 11 could become hurricanes, including three to six major hurricanes.
