Deputy Commissioner of Police Fitz Bailey

Deputy Commissioner of Police Fitz Bailey says the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division has been making a significant dent in illicit firearms and drug trafficking in Jamaica.

DCP Bailey says several illegal firearms as well as quantities of ganja and cocaine have been seized by the division since the start of the year.

His comment follows the recent arrest and charge of five men in relation to a J$12 billion cocaine bust, the largest in Jamaica's history.

"Since the start of 2024, the division's interdiction efforts have resulted in the seizure of 86 illegal firearms, 1,154 rounds of ammunition, 20,074 kilogrammes of ganja, approximately 67 kilogrammes of cocaine with an estimated street value of just over US$2 million. This figure does not include the most recent cocaine bust," DCP Bailey announced.

He said gains have also been made in the arrest of people for drug offences as the authorities continue to disrupt drug trafficking networks in the country.

A total of 168 people, including foreign nationals, have been arrested so far this year.

This reportedly includes 147 Jamaicans, eight Americans, five Britons, two Hungarians, Dutch, Argentinian, French, Canadian and Nicaraguan nationals as well as one person from Asia.

"The Jamaica Constabulary Force will continue to pursue individuals and syndicates engaging in the illicit firearms and narcotics trade and posing the greatest threat to the Jamaican state, having regards to the nexus between drug trafficking, firearms trafficking and violence," said the senior cop.
