Former Police Commissioner Lucius Thomas has died.

Mr. Thomas died Wednesday morning, at age 73, after ailing for sometime.

He joined the Jamaica Constabulary Force in 1969 and succeeded Francis Forbes as police chief in 2005.

He demitted office in October 2007.

Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson expressed sadness at the passing of Mr. Thomas.

General Anderson said the former commissioner was a gentleman who would be remembered fondly by members of the force who served alongside him.

"He was a person who genuinely cared about improving the quality of life of the members and the safety and security of the Jamaican people," he recalled.

General Anderson said the Jamaica Constabulary Force would now begin the process of "paying due respect to a man who gave so much to his country".
