Former Scotiabank employee gets six months in prison for defrauding customer

A former employee of Scotiabank in Portmore, St. Catherine has been sentenced to six months behind bars after she pleaded guilty to defrauding a customer of the bank.

Winsome Smith, 41, was recently sentenced after she pleaded guilty to simple larceny.

Smith was charged earlier this year following an investigation by the Fraud Squad.

She was accused of 49 counts of fraud, amounting to $1.4 million.

Investigators had reported that on May 9, the complainant went to the financial institution to conduct a transaction, but his card declined.

He lodged a complaint and was assisted by the accused, who issued him a new card allowing him to complete the transaction.

Two weeks later, the account holder returned to the institution and once again the card was declined.

The accused again issued him a new card.

A relative of the complainant later checked the account and discovered that $1.4 million was missing.

A formal report was made to the institution and the police called in. An investigation led to Smith's arrest and subsequent charge.
