Transport Minister, Dr Omar Davies, has shed more light on the reasons why there will be no roll back of the toll increase for users of Highway 2000. News came yesterday that the new rates take effect on July 5.
But since the announcement there has been public outcry over the decision. Dr. Davies told our News Centre that the agreement between the government and the toll operators, is explicit in how the rates are to be adjusted annually. This leaves few options for the Government.
Meanwhile, Dr. Davies says the Government is considering upgrading the Mandela Highway, to improve traffic flow. However, this is subject to the agreement with the operators of Highway 2000. Under the current agreement, work done on the alternative route should not unfairly impact the toll road or compensation would have to be paid to the Toll Authority.
Dr Davies states that the work being contemplated should not affect the toll road negatively. The process is expected to be completed in three years.
