The government is proposing mandatory life insurance for
fishermen.
Addressing a fisherman's day symposium at the Lion's Civic Centre in Old Harbour Wednesday, Permanent Secretary in the Agriculture Ministry Donovan Stanberry said the insurance is necessary due to the high risks involved in their vocation.
"There are some proposals for compulsory insurance. In the same way that the law requires you to insure your vehicle on the road for your own safety the fisherman is no different. They are facing a very serious environment,
"Sometimes in order to protect people you have to legislate. I think the proposal is that before they are registered as fishermen and licensed they would have to show that," said Mr. Stanberry.
At present most fisherfolk operate without insurance.
