Govt says ban on the importation of used tyres remains in effect

The Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce says the ban on the importation of used tyres into Jamaica remains in effect.

A statement from Minister Karl Samuda said although permission was given to clear used tyres which were on the wharf or in transit before January 12, no further used tyres are being allowed entry into the country.

The statement followed a newspaper report on Tuesday that said the government seemed set to lift the ban on the importation of used tyres despite continuing safety concerns locally and internationally.

According to Mr. Samuda, the Bureau of Standards Jamaica, in consultation with a range of stakeholders, is developing a Standard for Used Tyres which will take into account all safety concerns and a licensing framework is being prepared.

He said although it was anticipated that this process would have been completed by March 1, it is still underway.

The Minister added that any decision about the removal of the existing ban on used tyres will only be made after completion of the Standard for Used Tyres and the development of a licensing framework.

He stated that while he is aware of the used tyre industry’s concerns, the safety of the public is paramount.
