Thousands of Jamaicans are expected to make their way to the National Stadium in St Andrew today to mark 64 years of Independence with the signature Grand Gala. The event is being celebrated under the theme 'United in Celebrating Resilience'
The Grand Gala, staged annually by the Ministry of Culture through the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission, is the grand finale of Jamaica's Emancipation and Independence season.
Culture Minister Olivia Grange told a recent JIS Think Tank that the event will present Jamaica's story, diversity, achievements and creative power on the nation's largest cultural stage and production will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Kingston's designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Music as well.
Recording artistes Busy Signal and Wayne Wonder will be honoured with the annual Reggae Icon award by Prime Minister, Dr. Andrew Holness.
This year will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of Women in Service in the Jamaica Defence Force.
The show will end with fireworks and a drone display.
