The leader of the Guyana's People's National Congress Reform (PNCR), Aubrey Norton, on Tuesday called for the police to launch a probe into allegations by a Chinese businessman and lobbyist that he paid bribes to Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo to facilitate business dealings.
Mr. Norton made the call at a news conference.
Mr. Jagdeo in an interview broadcast on Monday night, rejected claims of kickbacks to facilitate Chinese investors doing business in Guyana.
In the interview with the US-based Vice News that was broadcast on his Facebook page, Mr. Jagdeo admitted helping people but denied ever taking bribes.
During the interview, Mr. Jagdeo said the former coalition government that was defeated in the last election, had conducted a probe of his bank accounts in and out of Guyana and did not find anything suspicious.
However, Mr. Norton said he was not aware of the probe.
