Hi-Pro feeds to compensate horse owners

The major distributor of horse feeds – Hi Pro Feeds is expected to shell out millions of dollars in compensation to owners who lost nearly a dozen thoroughbreds after eating contaminated food at the Caymanas race track three weeks ago.Vin Edwards, president of the Jamaica Racehorse Trainers Association says the company has agreed to compensate the affected owners.

“I know we had a meeting since the results came back and they expressed the idea of having good relationships with their customers, they have sent an agent to ascertain the horses that are fit and the number that died. The impressions I got is that they intend to take responsibility”

In welcoming the position taken by the company, Edwards said this will prevent the possibility of court action.

Close to 30 horses became ill after eating the contaminated food. Tests later revealed that the horse feed was contaminated with Ionophore Toxicosis, an ingredient which is beneficial to other livestock, but detrimental to horses.
