There is high anticipation surrounding this morning's sitting of the Senate where a decision is expected on the extension of the recently declared states of emergency in seven parishes across Jamaica.

Jamaicans appear split on deciding whether the measure is necessary to address crime.

Yesterday some private sector groups voiced their support for the security measure, while human rights group Jamaicans for Justice has said it does not  support an extension.

The Parliamentary Opposition has also voiced reservations about an extension of the SOEs.

The Government will need the support of at least one Opposition Senator in the Upper House later today to approve the extension.

If approved, the SOEs will remain in place until January 14, 2023.

Speaking Thursday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106, Executive Director of Jamaicans for Justice Mickel Jackson renewed her appeal for government and opposition senators to vote in the interest of Jamaicans and not along party lines.

She said opposition senators are to use their powers to protect the constitutional rights of citizens. In so doing, she urged the senators to vote not to extend the SOEs.
