Historic building in Spanish Town partly collapses

A Rivoli resident and Nicole Brown Duhaney, Director of Estate Management and Business Development at the Jamaica National Heritage Trust

A section of a historic building at 32 King Street in Spanish Town, St. Catherine collapsed Thursday morning, sending bricks tumbling onto the road.

A resident of neighbouring Rivoli, who requested anonymity, said he was alerted by a strange sound sometime before 5 o'clock, after which there was a break in electricity. He said that's when he looked through his window, saw the broken power lines, and realised a part of the building had collapsed.

The Rivoli resident expressed concern about the disaster that could have occurred had someone been passing at the time.

King Street, a section of Rivoli and Emancipation Square where the St. Catherine Municipal Corporation building and the Spanish Town court house are located, are without electricity.

A team from the Jamaica National Heritage Trust cleared the rubble and is assessing the damage.

Nicole Brown Duhaney, Director of Estate Management and Business Development at the Jamaica National Heritage Trust, said it was just last Friday that she did a survey of the historic buildings in Spanish Town.

Mrs Brown Dehaney believes that rain over the last few days caused the collapse of the building, known as Manchester House.

She said the building was to have undergone repairs, however, engineers will now be called in to remove remnants of the collapse and stabilise the structure.

She said based on her survey of the historic buildings last week,  some are under threat, therefore, the Jamaica National Heritage Trust is seeking funding to conduct the necessary rehabilitation as soon as possible.
