Holness clarifies he will only receive current PM salary

By Warren Bertram

Prime Minster Andrew Holness has sought to clear up misinformation regarding his decision to forgo a salary increase.

Mr. Holness has outlined that he only receives one salary - that of Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister has dismissed assertions that while he will not take the salary increase as Prime Minister, he would be receiving a higher salary as a Cabinet Minister or a combination of his Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister salaries.

He explained that he receives only one salary for his many roles, including Member of Parliament, Chairman of the Cabinet, Minister responsible for the Office of the Prime Minister, and Minister responsible for the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation.

Mr. Holness outlined that this is in keeping with the long-established principle of the Government of Jamaica that people paid from the Consolidated Fund shall only receive one salary, regardless of the number of jobs or functions they perform.

In cases where people hold multiple jobs or have discrete functions, the office holder would be compensated at the highest salary for the jobs or functions they hold.

Mr. Holness said his compensation will remain at its previous level, which is roughly $9.2 million, adding that no new or special allowance or retroactive payments will be applied.

Under the announced salary increases for the political directorate, the Prime Minister's salary would have moved to more than $22 million, effective April 1 this year.
