Hurricane Sandy hits Jamaica; one killed

Sandy made landfall in Jamaica Wednesday afternoon close to Kingston.

As Sandy roared across the island it tore off roofs, downed power lines, triggered landslides, flooded streets, uprooted trees and destroyed crops.

An elderly man was killed by a boulder that crashed into his house in Bedward Gardens in the commuity August Town located just outside the corporate area

Crocodiles were caught in rushing flood waters.

One ended up in a yard in Portmore St Catherine.

70% of the island was without electricity.

The storm which hit Jamaica as a category 1 hurricane then strengthened as it spun over open sea toward Cuba.

Although Sandy is no longer considered a threat to Jamaica, rain and winds continued to lash the island into the night.

Residents are advised to remain on the alert for rising waters, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Small craft operators should also continue to exercise caution until wind and sea conditions have returned to safe levels.

In Haiti, a woman died after she was swept away by a river she was trying to cross.

Tropical Storm Tony posed no threat to land.

The storm had maximum sustained winds of about 75 km/h and was moving east-northeast at 37 km/h.
