The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is probing another fatal shooting by the police.

A 55-year-old man, Eric Shakespeare, was killed during a police operation in the Mountain View Avenue community, sometime after 9 o'clock Monday morning.

Residents used burning debris to block the main road to protest against the shooting.

It's also reported that shots were fired while the police were attempting to clear the roadblock.

The road has since been cleared.

"The police report carrying out a targeted operation on Mountain View Avenue wherein they breached a bedroom door and allegedly confronted a man with a firearm pointed at the police. A law enforcement officer reportedly discharged his firearm. Mr. Shakespeare sustained what appeared to be gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the Kingston Public Hospital where he was taken. The police report that a firearm and ammunition were recovered at the scene," INDECOM Commissioner Hugh Faulkner told Radio Jamaica News.

He is urging residents who have any information on the shooting to contact INDECOM.

Radio Jamaica News was informed that the Police High Command had intelligence which indicated that Shakespeare, otherwise called 'Corrupt', was a high ranking member of the Back Bush gang involved in the trade of firearms, ammunition and uncustomed cigarettes.

He was deported from the United States after serving three years for drug trafficking.

The police have been placed on high alert in the Mountain View area as Shakespeare was well-known in the community.
