Jamaica has recorded two COVID-19 related deaths since the start of the year.

This brings to 3,756 the number of people who have died as a result of the respiratory ailment since the first case was confirmed in March 2020.

Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton made the revelation during Wednesday's meeting of the Standing Finance Committee of Parliament.

Dr. Tufton noted that the highest number of COVID-related deaths was recorded in 2021 when 2,734 people died.

In the year prior, 331 deaths were recorded, while 588 people died in 2022 and 101 patients died in 2023.

Dr. Tufton said some of those who died were healthcare workers.

"We lost about 53 healthcare workers either through secondary contracting or while they were on the frontline, which is something I think we need to do something for them to recognise their efforts at a later date," he noted.
