A Jamaican has been appointed to one of the top posts in the United Nations (UN).
UN Secretary-General António Guterres yesterday announced that Ambassador Courtenay Rattray is to be the new Chief of Staff.
Prior to this appointment, Ambassador Rattray served as Permanent Representative of Jamaica to the United Nations.
Jamaica's former Ambassador to the United Nations, Curtis Ward, explained that in his new role, Ambassador Rattray will be in charge of the main office within the UN system.
“ As to the UN Secretary General, you are responsible for everything that happens in that office . And remember the Office of the Secretary General oversees the UN Secretariat which is one of the main bodies of the UN. The Secretariat, the General Assembly and the UN Security Council. This is the Secretariat in which the Secretary General is head of the Secretariat. Anyone who wishes to get to the Secretary General, will have to go through Ambassador Rattray. He will essentially, be the most powerful person in the Secretary General’s office,” said the former Ambassador who was a guest on Beyond the Headlines yesterday.
