Environment Minister Mathew Samuda and Dr Damien King, Chairman of Recycling Partners of Jamaica
Jamaicans could soon be mandated by law to recycle their plastic waste to reduce plastic pollution.
Mathew Samuda, Minister responsibility for water, the environment & climate change, said on Thursday that the government may have to legislate some aspects of plastic management.
However, he did not provide a timeline for when the government hopes to have such a law in place.
In the interim, he said, the government is pursuing a string of policies to improve the country's waste management, and that includes plastic products.
The Minister was speaking during the official opening ceremony for the Kingsland Plastic Recycling depot on Thursday.
"Don't wait"
Dr. Damien King, Chairman of Recycling Partners of Jamaica, who spoke at the ame function, urged the Jamaican government not to wait for a global treaty for clear guidance on limiting plastic pollution.
Dr. King noted that the 180 countries present at the recently held fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee in Busan, Republic of Korea failed to produce a legally binding treaty on limiting plastic pollution.
He said some members from the participating countries at the event took issue with the clauses in the treaty that would require them by law to take certain actions to reduce plastic pollution.
