Jamaicans urged to support domestic tourism to help industry recover

Christopher Jarrett, President of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association and Paul Issa, Director of Couples Resorts

A president of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association, Christopher Jarrett, is appealing to Jamaicans to support domestic tourism as part of efforts to aid the sector's economic recovery in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa.

He says domestic tourism has always been a lifeline, pointing out how it helped keep many hotels going during the tough days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr. Jarrett adds that there are special rates available to locals at some hotels.

"I think the messaging and the message needs to be loud and clear that we are ready; 70% of our room stock, that is ready and available and open to guests, both locals and foreigners. And so we want to remind, especially the locals, that this is an opportunity to visit the resorts and the other hotels that are up and running because a lot of the hotels are at this time offering discounts, understandably so, and perhaps not what some have thought it wise and prudent to do so."

Mr. Jarrett was speaking on the Morning Agenda on Power 106.
