Jamaica's Consul General to Miami, Oliver Mair, says his office is closely monitoring the situation involving several Jamaicans, who have been detained after they went ashore at Pompano Beach in Florida in the US on Thursday.
They have been detained by Border Patrol.
One of the migrants told reporters he was fleeing violence in Jamaica.
It's reported that the group of about 16 migrants also included people from the Bahamas, Venezuela, Romania, and the United Kingdom.
Speaking with Radio Jamaica News on Friday morning, Mr. Mair said the Jamaicans are being processed.
He said the consulate is in dialogue with the US authorities and will issue a statement through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as soon as more information is available.
