JET: No confidence in NEPA

Dr. Theresa Rodriguez-Moodie, Chief Executive Officer, Jamaica Environment Trust

The Jamaica Environment Trust has expressed displeasure at the level of monitoring of the Rio Cobre by the regulatory authorities.

JET's Chief Executive Officer Dr. Theresa Rodriguez-Moodie believes the regulatory authorities have not been effectively monitoring the river.

She arrived at that conclusion after the National Environment and Planning Agency [NEPA] denied her Access to Information request following a report of pollution in the Rio Cobre in the vicinity of Zephyrton, St Catherine in May.

The agency sent a team to investigate the matter and on Sunday, May 14, it issued a statement saying its technical team conducted "assessments" along the entire river.

The statement said no "physical evidence of pollutants" was found and there was no impact on the river's ecosystems.

But Dr Rodriguez-Moodie, speaking Tuesday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, declared that there's no confidence in the assurances given by NEPA.

She said NEPA's refusal to share information is perplexing.
