The human rights advocacy group, Jamaicans for Justice is again raising concern about the absence of body-worn cameras during security force operations.

JFJ says the absence of the cameras continues to undermine transparency, accountability, and public trust in law enforcement.

The group says the increase in fatal shootings by the security forces over the last two years underscores the need for this essential tool to ensure justice and protect the rights of all citizens.

There were 28 fatal shootings in January, compared with 13 for the corresponding period in 2024.

Executive Director of JFJ Mickel Jackson told Radio Jamaica News that, while officers have a right to defend themselves when confronted by criminal elements, such interactions need to be recorded.

Ms Jackson has asserted that the leadership of the police force must move quickly to ensure body worn cameras are utilised on operations.

She adds that there should be disciplinary action against officers who fail to activate their cameras.
