Jamaica Labour Party local government representatives in Central Clarendon have denied knowledge of communication being circulated on social media, rejecting Delroy Williams as the JLP's candidate for the constituency.
Earlier this week, the JLP Secretariat said Mr. Williams had been recommended to replace Mike Henry who will not seek re-election.
The communication, largely being circulated via Whatsapp, claimed that Mr. Williams had been put forward without adequate consultations and purported to have been endorsed by JLP councillors Tanya-Lee Williams and Kenneth Davis and councillor caretaker Lorraine Green Mason.
But in a joint audio statement sent to the media, the councillors expressed support for Delroy Williams and sought to distance themselves from the alleged letter.
Mayor of May Pen, Joel Williams, had been publicly endorsed by Mike Henry to replace him in the constituency.
But speaking with Radio Jamaica News on Wednesday, Mayor Williams said he will respect the decision of the Jamaica Labour Party Secretariat to recommend Delroy Williams as the JLP candidate for Clarendon Central in the upcoming general parliamentary election.
Meanwhile, a Clarendon businessman has confirmed the authenticity of a letter purportedly signed by several business people in Central Clarendon endorsing May Pen Mayor Joel Williams as the JLP's candidate for the constituency.
The letter, dated February 3, was addressed to General Secretary of the Jamaica Labour Party, Dr. Horace Chang.
Speaking with Radio Jamaica News on Thursday afternoon, businessman Baron Stewart confirmed that he signed the letter, a copy of which is now being circulated on social media.
Mr. Stewart said at the time the letter was penned, it was the general feeling of those who signed that Mayor Williams would be the best candidate for the constituency.
But Mr. Stewart declined further involvement in the matter, now that the JLP secretariat has recommended former senator and Deputy Mayor of Kingston, Delroy Williams as the party's candidate for the Central Clarendon.
