The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has declared that it will not yield to the People's National Party's call for Prime Minister Andrew Holness to immediately step down.
In a statement on Wednesday, the PNP urged the Prime Minister to demit office following the revelations outlined in the Integrity Commission's investigative report into his financial affairs.
But JLP spokesperson Juliet Cuthbert-Flynn rejected the call, describing it as desperate and unwarranted.
Mrs. Cuthbert-Flynn maintained that the Integrity Commission report upon which the PNP premised its call has found the Prime Minister culpable of no wrongdoing.
She pointed out that the Director of Corruption Prosecution was clear in suggesting that the Prime Minister's explanation in relation to four accounts is credible and therefore prosecution is unwarranted.
"I understand that the PNP out of desperation wants to see the back of the most impactful and dare I say positively consequential Prime Minister that Jamaica has seen in recent times. This is a Prime Minister who has skillfully led our country through multiple crises and have not been implicated in unbecoming or any unlawful conduct."
"I also expect some PNP-affiliated groups which position themselves as civil society to shortly echo the same call of the PNP. However, I believe this position taken by the PNP is baseless and without merit," she insisted, adding that "unlike some individuals in the PNP, the Prime Minister does not hide his assets in trust funds".
