Jonathan Grant High students
Some students of Jonathan Grant High School in Spanish Town, St. Catherine were sent home on Friday morning for failing to complete assignments.
A number of students, including some from Grade 7, were seen exiting the school's gate sometime after 8 o'clock and making their way toward the town centre.
When Radio Jamaica's correspondent made enquiries, one of them explained that the school's administrators instructed them "go back through the gate" and back home if they had not completed all their assignments.
The sobbing student said she had received about six assignments but failed to complete just one.
Another student tried to finish her assignment while standing in the town centre.
One angry parent, who spoke with Radio Jamaica News, said the school could have sent a message to parents warning of disciplinary action instead of endangering the lives of the students.
"Give them a note and seh carry it to your parent. Send something to we, or call a meeting or call we and mek we come and hear what him is saying and him hear what we saying. But this is a big disrespect," the parent lamented.
The school's principal, Dr. O'Neil Ankle, was not available for comment.
When Radio Jamaica News contacted the Ministry of Education, it said the principal explained that the school has been trying to get the students to comply for four weeks.
The ministry said Jonathan Grant High has been instructed to use other measures to have students complete their assignments.
