Janice Budd a former colleague of ours here at RJR, has died. She passed away yesterday evening after battling cancer for some time.
Janice Budd was an accomplished journalist who started her media career at the Jamaica Information Service. She then worked at the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation and CVM Television, before joining us at the then RJR Communications Group, working in both radio and television news.
Her documentary series – On Assignment – which aired on TVJ, was a standout success. She was later appointed Radio News Editor.
After leaving RJR she was appointed Sunday Editor at the Jamaica Observer newspaper.
Recruited
Gary Allen, currently the CEO of the RJRGleaner Communications Group, was news editor at the young CVM television station in 1993 who recruited Janice Budd to join that station’s newsroom just as it was getting started.
He had deliberately sought her out, he said, “because of the clean clear diction that she had, the ability to present, the ability to report, the ability to do excellent script writing, and good features.”
Documentaries were “right up her street,” he recalled.
Opposition Leader Dr. Peter Phillips, in his reaction, described Ms Budd’s passing s “another major blow to the nation’s media.”
“Even as the profession is again plunged into mourning, journalists and other media workers continue to provide critical service to the society,” Dr. Phillips added.
Janice Budd also worked in corporate communications, first at National Commercial Bank, then at Shipping Association of Jamaica, where she was still employed at the time of her passing.
