Transport Minister Daryl Vaz has revealed that operation of the rail service from Spanish Town to Linstead in St Catherine, was costing the Jamaica Railway Corporation $10 million per month.

The revelation comes hours before the official start of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company's new 605 route, connecting Linstead to Spanish Town, St Catherine.

In December 2021, then Minister of Transport Robert Montague launched the  Jamaica Railway Corporation's "Back on Track School Train Service".

He said he was hoping to not only provide a service in St Catherine, but to expand it over time.

But recently, the JUTC announced the launch of a new rural stage carriage route connecting Linstead to Spanish Town.

According to the state-owned bus company, the service will provide  transportation for commuters along at corridor.

Mr. Vaz says the latest move aims to provide public transportation relief to the hundreds of students and other commuters in the wake of suspension  suspension of the railway service.

He added that the Jamaica Railway Service "looking at revamping the train (service) make it more cost effective," in light of the high cost it was incurring on the route, which he characterised as "unsustainable."
