The Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation is to spend $25 million to renovate bathrooms at seven markets in Cross Roads and downtown Kingston.

Mayor of Kingston Andrew Swaby made the announcement Wednesday following a tour of the Coronation and Cross Roads markets.

Mr. Swaby said the sanitary facilities are in a deplorable condition.

"We have to see how we can make them a little bit better, much better for, not for only the vendors, but for shoppers. And we also have to look at the whole issue of the public health hazard that it can cause to the society," he said, citing the need for food vendors to have access to adequate water.

Mayor Swaby said vendors complained of poor water supply, garbage collection and inadequate lighting.

He said the municipal corporation will be assessing the issues and considering cost-containing measures, including having roofing that lets in sunlight, among other solutions.

He said the procurement process has started and work should get underway in May.
