Large voter turnout reported in Trinidad & Tobago's general election

Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Keith Rowley, says he is encouraged by reports of a large turnout of voters in the twin island republic as electors go to the polls Monday to elect a new government.

Electors were told to expect a slightly prolonged voting process as officials work to ensure social distancing and hand sanitisation are practiced by voters and authorities at polling stations.

Dr. Rowley is leading the People's National Movement in the election, hoping to remain in office following its 23 to 18 victory in the 2015 poll.

The party is facing at least 18 other parties and four independent candidates.

Political observers say the main challenge comes from the United National Congress which is led by Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar.
