Lewin’s last day

Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin, Commissioner of Police is preparing to carry out final duties with just hours to go before he officially steps down as head of the Jamaica Constabulary Force on Friday.

Rear Admiral Lewin tendered his resignation two weeks ago in what is believed to have been a falling out with the administration over the police's lack of response to the crime wave.

He will be replaced on Saturday by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Owen Ellington who will step in as Acting Commissioner.

The Police Service Commission is getting ready to invite applications to fill the post.

Rear Admiral Lewin has urged policemen and women to give their full support to ACP Ellington.

However, speaking with RJR News earlier this week, for the first time since his abrupt resignation, the former Commissioner refused to address what led him to quit the Force.

No Bermuda for Lewin

And lingering reports that Rear Admiral Lewin is heading to Bermuda to become that country's new Police Chief  have finally been put to rest.

It was announced Thursday afternoon that the job has been given to Michael DaSilva.

Mr. DeSilva, who has been Bermuda's Deputy Commissioner since September last year, will take over when current Commissioner, George Jackson, retires next month.

The appointment was announced by Sir Richard Gozney, Bermuda's Governor who said Mr. DeSilva's appointment as Deputy Commissioner was part of a succession plan.

A report in Bermuda's Royal Gazzette newspaper said there were claims that Rear Admiral Lewin was tipped for the post of Commissioner however, the matter had been dismissed by the outgoing Jamaican Police Chief.
