With a week to go before the start of the 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season, Local Government Minister, Desmond McKenzie, says several areas which were not vulnerable to flooding are now severely compromised.
He says there is not much more the Government can do to limit the impact of flooding without the help of citizens.
Addressing the Hanover Municipal Corporation meeting on Thursday,McKenzie said his Ministry will embark on sensitisation sessions.
“We are going to be spending the next two to three months sensitising the country, using various means of public education about the importance of helping them to help themselves to limit the damage that occurs from rain and other associated events.”
McKenzie will also meet with Chairpersons of all Municipal Corporations in two weeks to devise a plan of approach for the hurricane season.
“The challenge I am throwing out to the counsellors in Hanover is for us to adapt a different kind of approach for the counsellors to use to speak to the various areas. You know the areas within the parish that are prone to flooding. This is going to be necessary because we will not be able to find all the resources necessary,” the Local Government minister said.
