Malvern Police station slapped with closure notice

The St. Elizabeth Health Department has served a 30 day closure notice on the Malvern Police Station.

The notice was served on the permanent secretary in the Ministry of National Security as a result of the poor conditions existing at the police station.

Chief Public Health Inspector for St. Elizabeth Beverton Roye told RJR News copies of the notice have also been sent to the Commissioner of Police and the Superintendent in charge of the St. Elizabeth Police Division.

Mr. Roye noted that the conditions existing at the Malvern station are deplorable and police personnel cannot be allowed to continue working at the facility. He says failure to adhere to the notice, which expires in mid May, will force the health department to issue a final closure notice.

The Malvern Police Station and court house were destroyed by hurricane in 2007 forcing the officers to occupy a dilapidated building which once housed the Petty Sessions Court in Malvern.

National Security Minister Peter Bunting recently toured the station and revealed that his Ministry is now awaiting the Jamaica Public Service connection to a new facility in order to have the new police station fully occupied.

That building was completed more than eight months ago.
