Thirty-three-year-old Devon Williams, the man accused of killing three-year-old Asher Campbell in Pagee, St. Mary, on May 29, was further remanded when he appeared before the St. Mary Parish Court on Thursday.
Williams, who is said to be mentally ill, indicated to the court that he is willing to represent himself at his trial, but his father told the court that he is now in the process of hiring an attorney to represent him.
The accused, who is charged with murder and several counts of wounding with intent, was remanded until June 20.
Williams, who is accused of killing Asher and injuring six other people during an attack, recently returned from the United States, where he was reportedly living with his mother.
Investigators had reported that, armed with a knife and a metal pipe, he attacked the three-year-old child and members of his family in a violent rampage.
Asher died from a blow to the head.
The child's mother and sister were also injured in the assault.
