Dr. Everton McIntosh, Senior Medical Officer at Mandeville Regional Hospital
The Mandeville Regional Hospital is reporting that it is operating above its COVID-19 bed capacity as more persons are turning up at the facility with symptoms of the virus.
Senior Medical Officer Dr. Everton McIntosh says there were 39 confirmed cases at the hospital on Wednesday, while the isolation ward only has 20 beds.
"So we are almost [at] 200% occupancy. So this means that there are approximately 20 patients out there between Accident and Emergency Department and the regular wards being isolated," he outlined.
Additionally, Dr. McIntosh said 47 staff members - including "eight doctors and about 22 nurses and other categories of staff from multiple departments" - are unable to work due to either COVID-19 isolation or quarantine.
However, he noted that this was out of a workforce of almost 700 healthcare professionals, so the hospital is "not yet at the point where we are critically affected in terms of the staff attrition due to COVID".
He said the hospital is still trying to maintain normal services.
