Mary Seacole being honoured in London

A statue in memory of Jamaican nurse and Crimean War heroine, Mary Seacole, is to be erected in London, England.

The design for the memorial statue has been chosen from among several submitted by accomplished artists.

Martin Jennings created the winning sculpture, which will stand in the grounds of St Thomas' Hospital in central London.

The Jamaican was voted the greatest Black Briton of all time in a 2004 poll.

The statue is expected to be erected by early 2011.

The Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal was set up to create a permanent reminder of the 19th Century nurse.
