Men on trial for murder of Christine Hewitt freed

Two brothers who were placed on trial for the 2006 murder of Christine Hewitt, a colourful Jamaican radio and television personality, have been freed.

David Gordon, Hewitt's husband, and his brother, Wordsworth, were freed on Thursday in the St Catherine Circuit Court, after prosecutors conceded that they did not have the evidence to establish a case of murder.

Hewitt was killed and her body found burnt in a Toyota Townace vehicle along Freedom Main Road near Mount Industry district in St Catherine in June 2006. The brothers were charged three years later.

Prosecutors were relying on forensic evidence and cell site technology to make their case. However, following conflicting testimony of investigators in the case, the Crown conceded and asked that a not guilty verdict be returned by the jury.
