After 22 years in politics, Michael Peart, Member of Parliament for South Manchester, on Sunday passed the symbolic baton of leadership for the constituency to Michael Stewart, a well known educator.
At a People's National Party meeting in Porus, Manchester, it was observed that, after the upcoming general election, there will not be a member of the Peart family involved in representational politics in the parish for the first time in 55 years.
Mr. Peart's father, Ernest, and his brother, Dean, also served five terms as MPs in Manchester.
Mr. Stewart, Principal of Porus High School, will be running against the Jamaica Labour Party's, Hydrant McKulsky, who is also an educator, in the next general election.
Mr. Peart is currently serving his second stint as Speaker of the House of Representatives.
