Janella Precius reports
One of Jamaica's most successful boxers, Mike 'The Bodysnatcher' McCallum has died.
Sources close to the world-renewed pujilist confirmed that McCallum died Saturday, apparently from cardiac arrest.
Mike 'The Bodysnatcher' McCallum resided in Las Vegas in the United States and was 68 at the time of his passing.
Preliminary reports say police discovered his vehicle parked on the side of the roadway and that he was unresponsive when a closer inspection was made.
The multiple winner of the RJRGLEANER Sportsman of the Year, McCallum competed from 1981 to 1997. He held world championships in his three weight classes, including the World Boxing Association (WBA) super welterweight title from 1984 to 1988, the WBA middleweight title from 1989 to 1991, and the WBC was a light heavyweight title from 1994 to 1995.
McCallum was described as a slick, hard-hitting technician in the ring. He earned his nickname 'The Bodysnatcher' due to his ability to land vicious body punches and fights.
McCallum was known for his exceptionally durable chin and toughness and was never stopped in any of his high-blasts.
He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2011, the Ring Magazine ranked him as 8th in their list of the 10 best middleweight title holders of the last 50 years.
