Minimum wage to increase to $15,000 on June 1

The national minimum wage will increase from $13,000 to 15,000 per 40-hour work week, effective June 1.

The minimum wage for security guards will also move to $15,000 per week, up from $14,000.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness made the announcement during his contribution to the Budget Debate in the House of Representatives on Thursday.

This represents a 15 per cent increase in the national minimum wage.

In Parliament on Thursday, Mr. Holness explained that new increase was in an effort to "keep the working class and our poorest abreast with inflation".

The hike comes just one year after the minimum wage was boosted from $9,000 to $13,000 per 40-hour work week.

When it was announced during last year's Budget Debate, the Prime Minister said that 44 per cent increase on the national minimum wage was the largest in 20 years.
