Ministry team heads to Happy Grove High

The Ministry of Education deployed a team to visit the Happy Grove High School in Portland on Tuesday morning to sort out the financial problems facing the institution.

Teachers at the school staged a sit-in Monday to protest against the non-payment of allowances for protective clothing which has been outstanding since December 2008.

They are also upset about the failure of the school to pay over income tax and National Insurance Scheme (NIS) deductions.

RJR News understands that non-academic staff at Happy Grove are contemplating joining the teachers in their protest.

Bevar Moodiem, Principal of the schoo,l who confirmed the teachers' action, told RJR News that the school owed more than J$30 million in income taxes.

RJR News was informed that the teachers were on Monday told that they will receive all outstanding allowances in their February salaries.

The teachers are, however, insisting on formal communication regarding the payment. It is not clear how the teachers' protest will affect Parents Day activities at Happy Grove scheduled for Tuesday.
