More graves disturbed at May Pen Cemetery for scrap metal

For the second time in less than a week, persons believed to be scrap metal thieves have committed acts of desecration at the May Pen Cemetery on Spanish Town Road in Kingston.

Three days after more than 100 graves were dug up and items of metal removed, news came on Wednesday, July 13, that several more graves had been disturbed.

This was confirmed by Desmond McKenzie, the Mayor of Kingston, who said on RJR’s daily current affairs discussion Programme Beyond The Headlines Wednesday night that, he had been informed by personnel at the cemetery that the robbers had returned.

"The superintendent told me that at least another 20 graves were disturbed," he said.

The discovery was made just hours after the police launched an investigation into the seizure of two 40-foot containers in Greenwich Town, loaded with metal suspected to be stolen.

Some of the metal was identified as tracks from the railway line in the area.
