The St. James police are reporting several inroads into criminal activities in the Zone of Special Operations (ZOSO) established in Norwood.
Several illegal firearms, including a submachine gun, were seized on Sunday during a major police-military operation in the community.
"In the wee hours of the morning yesterday, we conducted a major operational exercise within the Norwood Zone of Special Operation - Walter Drive to be specific - in search of illegal or prohibited firearms to disrupt some criminal activities that we understood were unfolding within the space. And during that operation, we were able to seize five illegal firearms, to include one Intratec submachine gun and four pistols," Deputy Superintendent Keeble Simms, joint commander for the ZOSO, told Radio Jamaica News.
One man was arrested.
He is Ackeem 'Pal' Brown, who DSP Simms described as a "habitual member of the criminal underworld".
Two other illegal guns were recently seized in the community.
DSP Simms said the police and military will continue operational activities in Norwood.
"We have been seeing tremendous gains in terms of the pegging back of illegal activities, inclusive of murders and shooting. And I am in a position to say that since the start of the year, as a matter of fact, since last year, the Norwood zone has not recorded a solitary murder or shooting incident. So while the murders are not happening within the zone, we are nonetheless mindful of the fact that the presence of these firearms poses (sic) tremendous risk to the quietude that prevails since the inception of the Zones of Special Operation a few years back," he acknowledged.
