More than 400 homeless people were treated to a bit of Christmas cheer on Thursday during the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) annual Christmas Day feeding programme.
Those in attendance were served a meal and given gifts at Water Lane in downtown Kingston.
Chairman of the KSAMC and Mayor of Kingston, Andrew Swaby, said the group was a mix of the homeless population from around the municipality, including Half Way tree, New Kingston and Cross Roads.
Meanwhile, Robert Hill, Chief Executive Officer of the KSAMC, has reiterated the appeal for charitable groups and individuals to follow the streamlined process for feeding the homeless.
Mr. Hill said the programme facilitated through the Poor Relief Department will eliminate the disorder that currently exists.
He noted that when independent actors engage the homeless without consultation, it leads to interpersonal conflicts and the generation of garbage and spaces where they are fed.
Mr. Hill said the issues are continuous challenges which the KSAMC has been trying to minimise.
The CEO said the KSAMC will be adopting a new strategy for its homeless feeding programme based on the findings of the National Homeless Survey conducted in October.
