Opposition Spokesperson on Housing Professor Floyd Morris is calling for the National Housing Trust (NHT) to make restitution to residents of Ruthven Towers by providing equitable reprieve in their mortgage payments until it remedies the defects and completes the agreed amenities at the development.
The residents say they were promised amenities including a swimming pool, multi-purpose court, gym, and other recreational facilities.
Instead, a meeting room was converted into a makeshift gym, with donated equipment from residents.
Professor Morris is also calling for the government to intervene.
Last week, the Gleaner reported that residents are growing frustrated with the NHT's slow response to addressing some 70 in-unit defects.
Professor Morris said the development, which was intended as a marquee project at a higher end of the market than the NHT was established to serve, is turning out to be one of the worst housing projects the NHT has implemented in its almost 50-year history.
He said the delay is an act of injustice that warrants the intervention of Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness.
Professor Morris pointed out that it is Dr. Holness' responsibility to ensure clients receive fair and equitable treatment from the NHT.
