Multi-agency probe begins into crash landing of Fly Jamaica plane

Representatives from the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Boeing have arrived in Guyana to assist in determining the cause of last Friday's crash landing of a Fly Jamaica aircraft.

Lieutenant Colonel Egbert Field, Director-General of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority, disclosed that a representative of the NTSB arrived on Sunday afternoon, while two representatives from Boeing arrived Monday.

They have analysed the aircraft and the accident scene at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.

Providing additional information on the role of the NTSB representative, Colonel Field explained that the individual will analyse and inspect the plane wreckage before passing his findings to an accredited representative in Washington D.C, where the organisation is headquartered.

As it relates to the wreckage, the aircraft has been handed over to Fly Jamaica.

However, Colonel Field said it remains under the jurisdiction of  accident investigators.

The aircraft overshot the open runway and veered to a closed section, resulting in damage to the right wing.

There were 118 passengers and eight crew members aboard.

Fly Jamaica said about 10 of the passengers were injured during emergency evacuation of the plane.

Firefighters granted bail

Meanwhile, the fourteen firefighters who allegedly stole from passengers aboard the Fly Jamaica aircraft were each released on 100,000 station bail on Monday.

Following investigations, a file was prepared and sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

It is likely that they will be arraigned before a Magistrate on Tuesday.

The firefighting team, which is stationed at the airport, includes supervisors with more than 15 years of experience as well as junior ranks.

They were arrested immediately after some passengers and a pilot on the plane reported that their items were missing.

The stolen items included tablets, cell phones and colognes.

Some of the items have been recovered.
